Pairing Physical Activity with Healthy Eating – Family Wellness Connecting with MSUM Students
Healthy lifestyles are not only made in the gym, but also in the kitchen. Healthy Cooking Coordinator, Nicolle Aukland met with Exercise Science majors from Minnesota State University Moorhead to share the Inspire Wellness Initiative’s mission of helping people cook well and move well for life, and how our Healthy Cooking in the Classroom program corresponds with their curriculum.
The Healthy Cooking in the Classrooms program is now in the health curriculum for all 4th and 5th grade students in the West Fargo School District as well as 3 pilot schools in the Fargo School District for the 2016-2017 school year. Students participate in four lessons throughout the school year that highlight hands on food preparation skills such as opening cans, safe slicing, mixing, measuring, and heat element safety. Each lesson features one MyPlate food group and encourages kids to try new healthy foods in a supportive environment.
While Dr. Gemar’s students might work with future clients in the gym, it is always important to know that healthy lifestyles and body composition are influenced by both physical activity and clean eating.
