Healthy Cooking in the Classroom Program Expanded to Include 3 Fargo Public Schools

Family Wellness provides hands on cooking instruction in the classroom to many area elementary students. In the 2015-2016 school year we impacted over 1,600 students and taught children many different food preparation skills such as: opening cans, slicing, mixing, dry and wet measuring, and heat element safety.

The Healthy Cooking in the Classrooms program is now in the health curriculum for all 4th and 5th grade students in the West Fargo School District and we have added 3 new schools in the Fargo School District for the 2016-2017 school year. With the addition of Bennet, Ed Clapp, and Kennedy in Fargo, we will be able to reach over 2,100 students in the 2016-2017 school year!

Healthy Cooking in the Classroom Program Results

  • 92% of students feel more comfortable cooking or being in the kitchen.
  • 81% of students reported feeling comfortable or very comfortable making healthy food choices.
  • 68% of students reported eating more fruits and vegetables a week.
  • 54% of students made 1 or more of the recipes that they learned in class, at home.

The Inspire Wellness Initiative helps support need based community wellness programming. In 2016, the initiative supported the Healthy Cooking in the Classroom program and brought hands on healthy cooking lessons to 4th and 5th grade students at 10 West Fargo elementary schools impacting over 1,600 students. Students participated in four lessons throughout the school year and each lesson discussed the MyPlate food groups and information on good nutrition. Students also had the opportunity to make (and eat) four Simple Cooking with Heart recipes which corresponded to the food group highlighted in each lesson.
